Workshop 1: National Taiwan University, November 2025

This workshop will not only examine how contemporary adaptations revise, rewrite, or even rebel against earlier narrative tradition, but also will consider the non-human dimensions of both pre-modern texts and their modern counterparts, to trace how these non-human factors shape and are shaped by literary imagination across time.

Workshop 2: Kyushu University, January 2026

This workshop will explore the ways in which the great waters of the world act upon us and are acted upon by us, as there is no greater entangling force than the oceans, pulling together history, climate, culture, literature, and industry. By engaging with representations of the oceans, the workshop will articulate novel visions of human relationship with this most important of environments.

Workshop 3: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, March 2026

The workshop will be devoted to the nonhuman elements of Medieval and Early Modern cultural production. By exploring the agency of nonhuman animals, vegetables and inanimate objects we will trace the formation of the classifications and boundaries of species and subjectivities.
