Deep Project
The deep matters, has always mattered, and will shape the future of our planet.
Far beneath the ocean surface, the deep is created and creates. It gathers stories, facts, known and unknown in constant flux. To many people, it is a realm of fear, darkness, a void, lifeless and static. To thousands upon thousands of creatures who call it home, it is a realm of slow growth, surprising dynamism, sonic vision, and ways of living still undiscovered. It pulls at us, challenges us, its layers of human interaction creating a powerful entity of mythology, history, experience, mediated through imagination, tool, algorithm. As connected adjective, it is metaphor for profound thought, feeling, experience. Once untouched by all but mind, now it is at the forefront of political, economic, and environmental battles.
The Storied Deep: Three Island Worlds is a multimedia project that seeks to explore how the deep ocean both acts upon us and is acted upon by us, by looking at three island chains, Japan, Hawaiʻi, and the United Kingdom and Ireland, in the past, present, and projected future.
